I would help him out with the cataracts problem, but 10 years in a suburbian garden with no sunglasses can really make it hard to correct. I will just humor him if he says he sees something that really isn't there.
Has Mr. Gnomer met the plaster cat? This could be the answer to his loneliness and isolation. If you think about it, it could be a match made in heaven. (Let's not have any comments here about cross-species relationships...this is a family blog, afterall.)
