Anyone want a new pet?

First of all, I just want to say thank you for those of you who were not going to mention the HUMUNGUS (sp?) spider in our window well in the basement-- because instead, I saw it on my own when I went into the room, and screamed at the girls to come and see it. You see, those things don't bug me when they are OUTSIDE!! But now...my husband, still having a lot of little boy in him, caught it in a jar and brought it inside. He wanted to put it in with our praying mantis, but I wouldn't let him. The mantis has an egg sack she is protecting, and a little catapillar has just built a cocoon right on the edge of the jar-- outside of course or it would be a gonner with the mantis. You see, we are regular entimologists (is that how you say it?) The girls really like the spider. They keep asking me if it will bite, and I said it is not a warm friendly pet and I don't want to see if it will or not. I assured them that all spiders can bite-- not all are poisonous. This one is nasty looking, though. I wouldn't be suprised if it body slammed its victims, put them in a head lock, and then took a big ole bite out of them. I really think it is a baby tarantula that has escaped to America in one of those underground tunnels. How it got to Newton, Utah-- I don't know, if only I could speak spider. He/she might have quite a story to tell.

I'm not going to pretend that it didn't freak me out when we stayed in that room 2 weeks ago but Mike kept assuring me that it was on the outside of the window. I was really nervous when the sun went down and it dissapeared, I was sure it had somehow found it's way inside. I'm glad to hear that it was outside when you caught it!

I thnk you should name it Charlotte and then get a pig and see what happens. Could prove interesting. I think it's a good thing you are teaching your girls that bugs are interesting creatures. I still scream and run when I see them...all of my kids do too...including my sons. Not the best method of teaching!

I recognize that little fella. Maybe one of Shelob's offspring, or something from the forest of Mirkwood.

I can't say I approve. I'm all for being interested in nature and all...maybe you could just do what we used to and use a pool skimmer to fling far far away...into someone else's yard.

What kind of Spider is it??? That is huge! Mom told me about it (after you found out) and so I am glad to actually see it.

I think you should let Rich put it in with the Praying Mantis and fill it. I would pay to watch that!

One last observation...I think that spider is bigger than one of Afton's hands...no kidding.

I have to admit I was creeped out by that spider. Like Wendy I sort of wondered if it could squeeze in some how. Glad you got it....but I like EM's suggestion...maybe fling it way far away

No, don't fling it, fight it! My money is on the spider...

Ha!! Sorry to inform you all, the spider has died of natural causes-- probably starvation. We didn't have enough fresh meat to feed it. I am with Em, I was going to throw it farrrrr away if it didn't die soon!!

That spider was as big as my palm. I know because I slept under its shadow all night long. He will be missed.
Amen.

I would not even pick that jar up! I am getting the shivers just looking at the picture of it! AHHHHHH! I HATE spinders! It's good you are training your girls not to freak out about them. I may have paranoid children.

Missy, you're not the only one who is scared to death of spiders...
I couldn't get close to those jar!!!!

I had a spider experience last night. I opened up the crawl space on my house to take a look and found two hobo spiders on the board covering the crawl space. Luckily the opening is outside. I also killed an egg sack that may have been one of theirs.

Julie, your spider is creepier.

EWWWW> Hobo's are so awful. Good thing you got the egg sack...yuck!

I love how people around here refer to Hobo Spiders (aka brown recluse) as simply "hobos."
I can't get used to it, so when someone in the neighborhood says, "I found a big old hobo under my son's bed yesterday." I want to say, "Did you feed him lunch or just ask him to leave."
And when they say, "I have an aunt who was bit by a hobo," I want to ask, "Does she spend a lot of time down at the railroad tracks?"
Stupid hobos, think they can invade our homes and bite our aunts.

Next time I find a Hobo (spider - although we do live by the railroad tracks...) I will save it and bring it to your house Julie to see it square off with big ugly.

Have you figured out what kind of spider that is yet?

ahhh! No you can leave it there Jared! We have lots. Actually, Hobo IS a funny name Mike- -and it is just a nickname for the spider, which you already know. They call it that because supposedly it hitched a ride on ships from Great Britain. It is a cousin to the recluse because they are both necrotic spiders (their bite causes your flesh to be "eaten" away). I think it is actually called a funnel or tunnel spider-- I can't remember, because they tend to build nests like that in the ground. But, yeah, it is pretty funny to hear someone say they saw a "hobo" under their bed!! I haven't found out what kind of spider ours was. I think I may take it in to extension and see. Maybe it is a Mexican spider and I can tell people we found a Mexican in our window well!!:)
