On Jared and Mike's birthday our families went snowshoeing at Bogus Basin. Each adult was pretty busy with a kid as we slowly made our way on a beautiful trail. We had snowshoes for Ian and Afton but they both didn't feel like wearing them, so we were pulling them on a little sled. When things got a little too scary for Afton, it was just Ian on the sled. He was having a great time showing us his skills of hanging on tightly and laughing off the occasional tumble. As we headed down a particularly curvy section we let him go on a little ride without holding the rope attached to the sled. Thinking he would stop in a moment or two as he had been doing thus far, what to our surprise when he just kept sledding down the mountain. And then his sled took a dangerous turn straight down the mountain, off the trail, and built up some serious speed. At this point Wendy started booking it down the slope, Jared tried to juggle two kids, I took off down the slope too, and Mike couldn't move because Eliza was strapped to his back. As the sled disappeared from sight, I think we all lost a breath or two in panic. I caught up to Wendy where she had gotten to Ian. He lay in the snow crying his head off and the sled was flipped a few feet away. The important thing here is that Ian is OK. He's super tough. We did all, however, learn a few things from the incident.
#1: Sleds going down the mountain go FAST.
#2: Don't count on a kid to fall off the sled every time.
#3 You can seriously book down the mountain on snowshoes when needed.
#4 A sled going off an eight foot bank gets a lot of air.
#5 Ian is a brave little guy and we are lucky he didn't get hurt.
Overall it was a fun day of snowshoeing and all of us adults got a fantastic quad and butt workout from carrying the kids back up the mountain. Happy Birthday Jared and Mike!
Here Jared did some quick smart thinking and documented the journey.

That is some serious air-time buddy! Way to go Ian! That is hilarious,(mostly because it ended well!!)
It is true that when I saw the sled take off I laughed pretty hard and then, in an attempt to save my son, yelled "Jump off, Ian! Jump off!"
We had lots of fun. Your home and home town are so beautiful. Thanks again.
Mike was carrying Eliza on his back so I doubt he could have run very fast anyways. Next time Ian promises he will roll off the sled instead of barreling out of control down the mountain, IF we can ever get him to go on a sled again!
glad he is okay, because that was seriously funny to read about. Happy Birthday again bros.
Is that Jared speaking on the video??? Sure it wasn´t dad Mark???
Whoa that was some ride! Evil Knevel Ian! Glad all is well....although Ian may not ride a sleigh again. Looks fun however. Dad and I need to get back up the mountain with our snowshoes
Is it OK to say that Ian sounds JUST like his dad??? Extreme sports anyone? We aren't surprised, right? And I agree that it is only funny because it had such a happy ending!
Oh, don't make that mistake, it was funny while it happened too. If he had ended up hurting himself, it would have been funny UNTIL the end. Age by age, Ian is ahead of me on stitches. When I was four, I had only received 5. He has had 10. If he stays out of trouble until age five, I'll be 5 stitches ahead of him.
