A bit of Family History

The Stubbs family's first encounter with the Church in England. First, a little background from Parley P. Pratt:

Parley P. Pratt visit to Northwich, Cheshire in 1841 We have just arrived from a visit to Middlewich and Northwich. In the former place we had a very candid hearing in the magistrate’s room, which was filled. In the latter place (Northwich) many hundreds of people assembled at our meeting house, among which were a large number of ‘Association Methodists’ and other professors with one Thomson at their head, who came possessed of the devil to make disturbance. These made all manner of noises, such as whooping, shouting, laughing, whistling, mocking, etc. They openly hissed and mocked the written Word of Jesus Christ and his Apostles, and made such a noise as to finally break up the meeting; after which they began to rush among the people, and bellow like bulls, and to run over, and knock down and trample under foot all who came in their way. We narrowly escaped, but finally got out of their midst. Mr Thompson then addressed them, justifying and applauding their conduct. The lights were at length extinguished and the room cleared, but not until some persons were wounded, and some forms broken. From the biography of Richard Stubbs recounting an event right after his 18th birthday, while he was still living in Northwich, Cheshire, England: "Mormon elders were preaching the Gospel in the neighborhood in October of 1841 and curiosity led Richard to hear their message. Some of the apostles were visiting England at the time. Richard was listening to a street meeting when a mob under the direction of a Methodist minister broke up the meeting and he paid no attention to religion at that time."
